Why I am furious with Verizon

I have never used my blog as a place to express my dissatisfaction with something... it's not typically why I write... but this has me so upset - I had to write about it.  And I also want you to know if you're a Verizon customer and want the new iphone 5 what you're getting into.

My husband and I switched to Verizon wireless last year because we were having a few problems with service in our home.  We were happy customers with AT&T, but it was important for us to have service because we primarily use our cell phones for personal and work.

We made the switch just before Verizon stopped offering unlimited data to their customers.  We paid the penalty to get out of our contract with AT&T to go with Verizon because we wanted to be sure we had unlimited data.  We planned on sticking with Verizon forever.

Now - VERIZON is not going to allow you to keep that unlimited data if you want to upgrade to the iphone 5 (or ANY 4G phone).

The ONLY way they will let you keep the unlimited data is if you purchase the iphone for the FULL price - which for the phone we would want be $850 instead of the very discounted price that AT&T and other phone carriers offer.  Basically, you'll be paying hundreds more dollars for the same phone.    Not to mention, Verizon charges a $30 upgrade fee per phone.

I can't believe a company would do that to their customers.  We pay so much already for our service, and it saddens me that they are so money hungry that they are going to "change their policy" and go against their word... especially after we paid to get out of our contract with AT&T to get "grandfathered in" to Verizon's unlimited data plans.  We're sad we didn't just stick with AT&T because they're not changing any policies and we would still have unlimited data.

We are going to switch back to AT&T.  Even though it will be about the same price as it would if we stayed at Verizon because we won't have our unlimited data anymore with AT&T because we switched - it's the principal of the situation.  It's discouraging... and I hope they understand that building  customer satisfaction is very important - and "changing your policies" is not the way to go about doing that.

Okay, end rant.  Off my soap box.

Darn you, Verizon!!!

**I understand I probably don't need the unlimited... for me it's the principal of the situation.  If most people don't use it like they are saying... then why not keep the unlimited?**

I was concerned that AT&T would follow suit with Verizon and throw everyone under new data plans too. Ironically the company that can't give you the best service is the one that gives you the best deal.

That's bogus!

I know it stinks, but let me tell you: my husband had unlimited data with AT&T and this boy used his phone ALL THE TIME. Constantly streaming, etc. But he never went over 1 gig of data. So, yeah it sucks that you won't have unlimited data anymore, but do you really use it? My hubs and I got a "share everything" plan two weeks ago with 2 gigs of data and it's only $140. Not bad! (Can you tell I love Verizon? I've had it for 10 years =X)

I am outraged too! Verizon is doing this with all future upgrades not just the iphone 5.

That's really annoying. I'm still part of my parents plan who have had Verizon for over 12 years before it was even called Verizon. They are not going to be happy! I hate that phone/tv dish companies have such terrible customer service. It makes me so mad because they make so much money!

Sheesh! I can totally see your frustration! My husband and I are AT&T customers and discussed, briefly, the possibility of switching to Verizon. Thank goodness we didn't!
I would write to AT&T about this, perhaps they can take advantage and offer a "grandfather" for Verizon customers who have been slighted...It's worth a shot! :)

I upgraded my phone to a 4G phone a few months ago with Verizon Wireless. I was grandfathered into the system with unlimited data as well. However, I believe in late July they got rid of unlimited data if you resigned or started a new contract after that certain date. I was upset as well, but I honestly have not even been near my data usage package and I use my phone all the time! The nice thing about the data is you can use wireless networks and that doesn't use up any of your data plan. So, if you guys are at home or places with wi-fi most of the time you will probably not even go over! I was so frustrated just like you, but it hasn't impacted me at all!

You might want to see about talking to someone like a supervisor in customer service via phone before doing the switch. sometimes they can override, its not something their generally able to do in a store. unfortunately its something that ALL wireless carriers are leaning towards is getting rid of unlimited data.

I talked with a girl who works for verizon who told me this just last week. I have unlimited everything as well and she said (since June) once someone upgrades their phone this would happen.

I agree w/another commenter...I never ever go over 1gb. Never come close so even though it sucks, it won't necessarily effect me. I don't know if you've looked to see how much you guys use, but maybe take a look...? It might not affect you as much as you may think... =/

I've heard rumors that AT&T could eventually do the same thing. =/ but I hope for your guy's sake, they don't. :)

Oh I forgot to mention that my husband and I just started using LTE (via AT&T) on our iPads and the speed is amazing! You are going to love it!

Good to know Thanks for sharing! I'm on one of the old Verizon plans that I've had for 6 years and I've heard that when I go to renew my contract I will be in for a surprise. No good because I love my Verizon.

Omg are you flippin kidding me?! I have verizon and my update is up at the end of Novemeber, so I'm getting an iPhone 5 when i'm due for the update. WHY the hell does it change everything just because it's an iPhone?! Seriously that makes me so angry! They're going to lose a lot of customers that way

that would make me so upset too! I cannot believe that. I have ATT and while I hear the reception is better with Verizon, I too did not like their customer service. So sorry that you had that experience.

Oh yea, they are horrible! My husband was eligible for an upgrade, so he upgraded his phone right before they made this policy so that he could keep the unlimited data plan. Now I can pretty much never get a new phone because I'd get kicked off the unlimited plan. Their basic data plan is so low though, that I went over my limit in less than a month when I first got the iphone (which was after they stopped offering the unlimited plan - when i called to complain, they grandfathered me because we're on a family plan and my husband had unlimited data). I don't know what the hell they expect you to do! I'll definitely be looking into a new service provider once my contract is up. We've been Verizon customers for over ten years... they just don't care about keeping loyal customers happy.

yeah we have verizon and they just did away with unlimited data. So unless you keep the phone and plan you have exactly the same forever, everyone will eventually have to give up unlimited data. I too have heard that all the cell companies will eventually be eliminating unlimited data, eventually. Still is very infuriating!!!

I work in the cell tower industry and I can tell you it's hard on the carriers to keep up with all the data. They are constantly doing upgrades to the towers to provide customers with better coverage. While phones used to be for talking they are now for facebook/twitter/instagram/emails/directions etc and that takes up so much space on their network it's unreal. The other carriers will get rid of unlimited data soon too.

When you switch back to AT&T, see if the company you work for gets a discount with them. Your husband might get a discount for being a firefighter too. They usually offer discounts for some places, I know my Uncle gets one for working for the state, and I got one when I worked at Target.

I know exactly what you mean with Verizon because I got through it every time I get a new phone and any time I've ever had to deal with them. I DESPISE Verizon, but then again the other phone companies are probably just as bad.

I'm so glad that you posted this. I just pre-ordered my iPhone 5 and they failed to tell me ANYTHING about this. I love Verizon's service, they are the best but that is so crazy to make everyone change from unlimited! I guess I'm stuck now though. :(

Honestly Verizon is the WORST carrier when it come to customer service. I have had a Verizon phone since I FIRST got a cell phone, which has been almost 15 years and let me just say, as SOON as our contracts are up, we are switching. Yes Verizon has the best service BUT they have the WORST customer service and they are THE most expensive. Believe me whatever they are offering is not worth staying with them. We are switching to Straight Talk. They are a "pay as you go" plan, but if you sign up for automatic payments then it's no problem & they have unlimited everything for only $45 a month and the kicker is that they use Verizon towers, so they have the same coverage area as Verizon. I can't wait to switch & get away from Verizon asap!!

I just got out of the dark ages and bought an Android a month ago, and still am so confused as to why they posted $199 for the price, but they made me pay a $30 upgrade fee. I was due for a phone, so I wasn't upgrading out of cycle, and why don't they just put $230 for the price instead of $199. It is all a scam. I've since called them 4 times to mail me my rebate and receipt since they neglected to include in the bag, and still nothing. Sorry for the rant, but I saw your post and just had to laugh since I'm dealing with them as well! :)

i'm an att- er for life. but i'm a little bad at them too right now. they won't unlock my phone because they literally just can't find my phone in their system even though i pay them every month for their service...

I've had ATT forever and I'm not going anywhere. Usually, they'll be really good about stuff. Tell them you want to switch over to them and they might offer you some extras.

AT&T did the same thing to us when we upgraded our phones. I got in just below the deadline, but both of my parents & my husband all have different data plans because they change them so frequently! I know that even though I'm eligible for an upgrade, when I do get the iphone 5, I will have to pick a new data plan and won't be eligible for the Unlimited anymore. :-(
