The last year of college started an obsession I still haven't kicked. When I bite into a juicy grilled cheese from In N Out... mmmmm. Delicious. If you don't live in CA or the US (or the few states that have a location or two), you may have only heard about it. It's a fast food restaurant, but the only reason it fits into that category is because you can drive thru and you get your food fast.
It is one of my all time favorite places to eat. I am so passionate about it that yesterday, while TL and I were in line, we started talking about all the reasons we love it so much.
It has a very simple menu. Fries, cheeseburger, hamburger, soda, milkshake. But here's the thing... neither TL nor myself eat red meat. So, how is this our favorite place? Simple. We order a grilled cheese with one slice of cheese (their cheeseburgers usually come with two), grilled onions, tomato, lettuce, special sauce, and the bun. (On healthier days, I skip the cheese)
I can't believe I am publicly admitting this, but... I usually eat here at least once a week. Sometimes twice, and I have been known to make tri-weekly appearances there.
Here's why:
It's cheap. That grilled cheese only sets me back about 2 bucks and usually I don't get fries, but those are cheap too!
The people who work there are friendly! In N Out has not been franchised and I hope their owners never do. They have a quality of work there... good, clean, happy people who care about their work. I know someone who used to work there and she said they were actually paid decently and had a yearly work party. You never see their workers talking on a cell phone in the corner or goofing off.
They know that putting a restaurant on every corner isn't going to sell them more food. The business aspect of In N Out is one of the smartest I have seen. They only put restaurants near freeway exits, they only have one restaurant in a city... and only the lucky cities get 'em. (Side note: when we were moving, we timed the distance to the nearest one because I wanted to make sure it was close. Isn't that sad?)
The lunch and dinner lines to eat here can be dauntingly long... but they move fast and are efficient. In all the times (god knows how many times I have eaten there) they have never messed up my order.
Their PR people are genius. They don't have commercials or radio ads. Their main form of marketing is billboards letting you know a restaurant is coming up (thank goodness for those) and word of mouth.
And a big reason I love that place: local, fresh, delicious ingredients. You can taste the difference between a burger here and one from McDs.
Also, that veggie burger is only going to set you back about 300-400 calories. The burgers aren't bad, either! And... it fills you up!
{both of these pics are from before I started having the tomato & grilled onion - it was just spread, lettuce, a piece of cheese & the bun.}
I guess I should side note that I don't work for In N Out and have no ties to it at all. But maybe I should.
If I could do a giveaway and send this to someone outside of CA, I would. I wish I could share it with everyone. But... I am not sure how it would taste if it took a few days to send it! ;)
So, if you ever make it to CA or one of the few states that have a location... you have to try it!
And... if you eat here, what's your fave?
[In N Out rant over]
for now.

I love In N Out!! It is just heavenly. I like to get their animal style fries and their neopolitan shakes!! So yummy. I might just need to get In N Out today :)
I only got to the second paragraph before I had to stop reading. I'm in L-O-V-E love with In-N-Out and the nearest location is in Vegas. I want the double double and a trip to Vegas so bad after two paragraphs, I couldn't continue for fear of spontaneously planning a trip this weekend!

You have officially made me crave In n' Out:-) When I wasn't eating red meat I loved their grilled cheese and was astonished of all their other "hidden menu" items!
we don't have In N Out in TN, however, we just happen to be venturing out to LA in February and I made Jeff PROMISE to take me since I have never been--wahoo!!

I love me some In'N Out!! I am lucky to live within 10 miles of two locations :)
I love dipping my fries in the spread sauce :)
OMG, LOVE In & Out! It's so fun to bring people there that are from out of state and have never had it. I try not to talk it up too much because then they seem to be like "what's the big deal?"
I had some friends that worked there in HS and they paid very well for that kind of job at the time. Also, my friend that worked there took me with her to the annual company picnic which they hold in Irvine! They fly each employee and a guest there and have this big picnic/carnival with games and prizes and ALL YOU CAN EAT In & Out. It was one of the best days of my life!
I'm a fan of the cheeseburger, animal style myself. :)
well now i want some in n out! i think i'm missing out big time! ;)
Favorite. post. ever! I LOVE In-n-Out and I haven't had one since 1998!!! =( I live on the OPPOSITE coast =( booo!!
Thanks for the tease lol
Okay, I know I'll probably get stoned to death for admitting this, but I'm not a fan. I mean, I can eat there, sure. But I never crave it and if I have a choice I'll probably go elsewhere. Why? I have no idea. It just isn't my thing even though I've tried to get on the bandwagon more than once. Weird, right?
My husband and I LOVE In-N-Out!
OMG Tracy no meat?! Lol.. I never knew that but they are the best burgers and now I might just have to hit the one in Natomas on my way home from Kohls tonight :)

When I visited two friends two summer ago, one in LA and one in San Fran, I ate In N Out about 12 times. It was delicious. I just had a burger and fries, but I think I had the burger animal style? And I swear I think there was something on the fries that made them better...
My fave is the double double animal style and protein style.
I just had some again like last week. It's delicious!

oh my goodness I love IN N' OUT!! So good, yum! I totally agree with you that you can never get tired of it and I was so super excited when they built one in UT since I've been in between there and Cali! Good post love and happy weekend!
Saw your comment on my friend Tiffany's blog and saw you were in NorCal! We just moved here and are in Dixon but have fam in the Natomas area. We love In and Out too!! I do meat, cheese, and animal sauce, no fries, and sometimes go for the chocolate shake! Nice post!
Double double animal and protein style. Yumz!
I love In-N-Out, too. For In-N-Out newbies, be sure to google the secret menu before you go.
Another thing to love is that In-N-Out provides health benefits for their employees.
Also, they're owned by Christians and Bible verse addresses are hidden all over, like look on the bottom of your cup right around the edge the next time you go.
Great food, great business.
In n Out is ALWAYS worth the wait! I go there about once a week too. My favorite is a cheeseburger with ketchup only :) So delicious!
