I love this little man!

My nephew, Ryan, is absolutely the sunshine in our family.  Since he was born, I've been hoping that one day TL and I will have kids that are just as cute (but this may be a tough task).  He has the best little personality... always smiling, giggling, and tough to boot!  He is so adorable - I thought I should share a few pictures of him - a collage of pictures from my dad  and my sister (his mom).
He's irresistible!
He loves his new wagon from pops (my dad!)
Yo, ladies... I just got my haircut!
Golfing a round before nap time!
Visiting Auntie Juju in her classroom!
His boating outfit!!

He always brightens my day.
I'm at home sick, but I am enjoying relaxing and looking forward to a great TV line up tonight!
(Glee, DWTS, Parenthood)

Enjoy your Tuesday!

I don't speak Chinese

but while my friend, Michelle, and I were on our way down to LA to see the girls, I sure wish I did!

It was a chaotic day.
SFO had an emergency landing on one of their runways, therefore delaying a whole heap of flights - cancelling some... including ours.  We made the most of it, found another airline that was flying down there, and had a chatty drink at the bar while we waited through our 5 hour delay.
But, a family visiting from China behind us in line, did not.
They didn't speak very much english... they only knew a few words - and no one in our terminal at SFO knew any Chinese.  From what I could gather from them, they were doing a self-guided tour through California and they had to catch another flight in LA before heading back to China.
I felt so helpless.  I was trying to think of different ways I could find out some Chinese words.  I even looked up a translator app on the iPhone, but it was taking so long.  (I was also speaking very loudly, I finally caught myself, but you know when you're trying to tell someone something and they don't understand you speak louder, thinking it's your volume and not your words... I must have sounded like a dork!)
So, I thought... who do I know that knows Chinese??
Of course... a very smart reporter from my work, Suzanne Phan, speaks it.  She lived in China for a while.  She's also extremely nice.
So, I called her.  She was driving and had to pull over to help me... but she translated everything for this family over the phone.  She had a full conversation in Chinese with them, and they got all the details they needed!
It was awesome.
She was so helpful, and I cannot tell you how thankful that family was.  They kept saying "Thank you", over and over.

After my short little list of places I have been out of the country, I know how frustrating it can be when you are somewhere no one else knows what you are trying to say and you can't understand a thing.  It can really ruin everything!
Hope you are having a fabulous Sunday!

Our trip to Maui!

We feel so fortunate to have spent our first wedding anniversary in Maui.  It is so beautiful there!  My favorite part of being in the aloha state is the over abundance of plumeria flowers.  They smell so good that I can't help but stick my nose right into the center of them and keep it there!
So beautiful.
We stayed at The Westin Kaanapali Resort and we really liked the place.  The pools were fantastic (but pretty much all the pools along the area had wonderful pools).  We did a snorkel trip on a sail boat named "The Gemini" and saw a big pod of dolphins and 4 sea turtles!  We have pictures we took on an underwater camera, but I still have to get those developed the old fashioned way.
We drank our fair share of Mai Tai's and Blue Hawaiians, but our absolute favorite was the Aloha made Kona Longboard.  Very yummy!
I love that lonesome palm tree in Lahaina.
My mom & dad were also in Maui and our tripped overlapped a couple of days... it was so fun spending a little time with them in paradise!  My dad and TL went wakeboarding and barefooting in the ocean while my mom and I went for a long beach walk and shopped!  We also celebrated my dad's 56th Birthday... very special. :)
Our last night there, we accidentally over-ordered, yuck!
It was a beautiful trip... we love Hawaii!

The Glass Castle

While we were on our vacation, I found time to start reading books again.  I was nearly through my first one after the flight over to Maui and I've found the small time I had to read really sparked my addiction again!  I've only finished 2 books since (One Fifth Avenue by Candace Bushnell & Eat, Pray, Love)  Although they were both good reads, especially Eat, Pray, Love, I really appreciated the book I just finished today - The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

Not only is it meaningful and beautifully written, it's the truth... and I had to keep reminding myself that this was a memoir of her life -- even when what she was writing was so unbelievable.

If you're looking for something to read, I strongly recommend it.  You will graciously be reminded to appreciate the small things in life & it shows the rare characteristics of strength in the human race.

I've asked around for some more recommendations for a good read - and I am starting The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo today (Several people recommended it!) I can't wait to dive in!

Have you read The Glass Castle?  What did you think?
Any must-read book ideas?

Also... it's the first day of FALL!  Can't wait to see the trees change color & decorate the house with some halloween goodies!  I hope you're enjoying your Wednesday :)

From city to city!

Happy Monday!
Just got back from Los Angeles late last night -- had a fantastic weekend there with my friends.
I'm back in San Francisco with TL, his brother & my dad.  They are all going to the Niner game tonight, and I'm seeing one of my good friends, Nina, tonight for dinner.  She just got engaged and I can't wait to catch up and talk about wedding details!  We also haven't seen each other for so long.  This weekend has been just what I needed... time with good friends :)
I just love this city... it's gorgeous out today!  (The oracle convention is going on, so there are people and roads blocked every where!)

Enjoy the start to your week!

Back from paradise...

We are home from paradise (aka Maui) and it was a wonderful trip.  We were so lucky to be able to celebrate our first year of marriage at such a beautiful place.  The beaches are gorgeous, white sand & turquoise water for days... it was so special.  I will share some pictures of the trip as soon as I can upload them off of my camera.  We had so much fun!
It was back to work for me today and again tomorrow, and then I am off on another adventure this weekend with my girlfriends!  We are headed to Los Angeles to celebrate my very dear friend, Casey's birthday.  (A couple of girlfriends already live there, but my Nor Cal friend, Michelle and I are flying down together!)
Thank you for all the sweet comments regarding our anniversary -- it's amazing how fast the year went!
I hope you all are doing well and enjoying the mid way point of the week...
100 days until Christmas! Eeek!
xoxo
Paradise :)

Baby Brayden

About 2 years ago, I started really loving reading other people's blogs.  I love getting ideas, hearing stories, and being inspired by people's lives.  One of my long-time favorite blogs, someone I have gotten to know through her writing, is going through a very tough time her brand new baby.  Her and her husband are showing so much strength, and taking all of her readers along with them on their journey.  Their baby boy, Brayden, was born 3 months early.  It's been one set of bad news after another for them... yet, they are still staying strong.  They need everyone's good thoughts and prayers.  I feel like I know them, even though we have never met.
What they are going through inspires me so much, I just had to share with my family and friends who read my blog - because they need your good thoughts, too.
If you want to read her blog, here is a link.
This is Brayden looking up at his mom.
Taken from her blog.
Thinking only encouraging thoughts for baby Brayden.

Our Anniversary: A fabulous first year!

Happy Anniversary to my favorite guy, TL...
I can't believe how quickly the first year of our marriage went.
It was, at times, a roller-coaster ride for us... many, many changes (we bought our first house together, job changes, moving, and health issues) and we made it... together.
I can't believe I got so lucky to be married to this guy.
He's generous, sweet, funny.
There's a song my sister, Kelly, referred to in her toast at our wedding called "Then" by Brad Paisley.  It's a song about love and it's capability to grow so much more than you ever thought.
I remember, quite vividly, the moments before I walked down the aisle to TL.  I remember being overwhelmed with love for him... thinking "I've never ever loved someone so much".  And now, after just one short year - I love him even more.
He's truly my best friend.  He knows every secret, every flaw.
He's a good guy - a friend to everyone.
He makes me laugh every day!
He's a hugger, not a hand-shaker... and I love that about him.
He listens to me, he's there for me - always.
Marrying him was the best decision I've ever made.
I am so excited for our anniversary trip to Maui. And dinner tonight in San Francisco... guess what pair of shoes I'm wearing... my blue wedding shoes! :)

I hope everyone is doing something fun for your 3 day weekend!
Happy Labor Day!

If the shoe fits...

I've looked for a decent pair of flats for SO long.  Every pair I've ever gotten or tried on - hurt my feet.  I'm not sure if it's the size or narrow width of my feet that is awkward, but I've felt so "out" of the flat trend for ever now...
well, not anymore!
(sorry, the weenie dogs wouldn't stay out of the picture)
I found a comfy pair (cute, too) at Macys's... not to mention - they were on sale!
I walked around with them on in the store for a while, and they were really flexible, and they weren't hurting the back of my feet (that's my main problem with nearly every pair).  I even wore them out of the store after I bought them to break them in a little.
Now, I've worn them for 4 days strait... and no blisters, no pain!
(please excuse my ugly feet)
Has anyone else ever had this flat dilemma?  I am so happy to finally have a pair that fits... I know, I am crazy! :)

Hope you had a fabulous Friday and are excited for your Labor Day weekend!

It's September!

I can't believe September is already here.
A full year ago today - I was bursting at the seams with excitement for our wedding day which was just a few days away.  I remember anxiously awaiting the arrival of close friends and family - and just glowing with happiness about the following days & all the love that was surrounding me.
I love this month... I will forever.
Not only did I marry my sweet guy, but we traveled through Europe together - one of the best adventures I've ever been on.  We learned so much about the places we went to -- and it was so fun to experience so many new things with someone I love so much!
(Interlaken, Switzerland)
September is also a month that marks an important date from my past.  During my senior year of high school, my mom's best friend, Barb, passed away after fighting Leukemia for many years.  Barb was more than just my mom's best friend, she was my friend - and we had a connection that surpasses any emotion I have ever felt.
She was just one of those women that is truly special.
Do you know what I mean by that?
I mean, this woman was an angel.  Her laugh, compassion, love and generosity overflowed the soul of anyone who knew her.
The lessons I learned from her resonate with me, and when I think of her - I am completely overpowered with such strong feelings of joy & love.
She was a remarkable woman... and I think of her daily.
Even though September was a sad month for our family, it was also the month she stopped suffering & found a permanent spot in the hearts of everyone who knew her.

September - for me - is a meaningful month.  It's a beautiful month, too.  Fall is just starting to peak it's way into our lives.  It's also the last month of calm before we get wound up in the holidays.

I feel blessed.
September, I am so happy you're here.

I hope you are having a wonderful day!
